More on the “hugeness” of today in a bit… but first let’s get into today’s episode!

The title of this episode is “The Simple Framework to Mind-Blowing Success as a Doula”... but it could really just be called “The simple framework to success, period.”

I’m about to spill THE secret that lead me to serve over 1,200 clients and students over the last 18 months. 

But first - pinch me - because that number blows my freaking mind.

What I’m about to teach you is something that you can do to transform your entire life, as a BRAND NEW DOULA, without leaving your couch. 

And it has to do with the m-word.

That dirty, filthy, society-collapsing m-word. Money.

A couple weeks ago I told you I got my first horrible review for this podcast. But I have to share the good news that I finally got another.

She said, “This podcast is a “get rich quick scheme” but make it birthy.”

Whew. Ouch.

Am I offended? Literally not in the slightest (and that says a lot because I’m still a people pleaser in A LOT more ways than I’d like to admit).

But instead of getting offended… I got curious. 

This is something that I teach the moms inside my birth courses… to face difficult situations with curiousity instead of anxiety or fear.

Why would she say that?

How does teaching birthworkers business skills equal a “get rich quick scheme”...

I sure as hell didn’t get rich quick.

I couldn’t afford my mortgage the first 2 years I was a doula, so I rented out the spare bedrooms in my house… while I created a cocoon in my master bedroom with my newborn. 

Why would she say that?

Yes, I make more money than I ever have… but I also serve more women than I ever have.

You know what else I’m able to do with the money I’ve made as a doula and educator? 

I’m able to put food on a handful of other moms’ tables by employing them.

I’m able to offer scholarships to every single program I’ve ever created, and say “yes” to 95% of applicants.

Was it easy to get to where I am? I donno… but I had a ton of fun doing it… 

Does having a successful online birth business make me any less of an in-person doula? Of course not, if anything I get MORE in person doula clients through the online platforms I’ve created…. 

Why would she say that?

Why would she say that?

And then it hit me. 

You know who would say something like that?

Someone who has tried, and tried, and tried to build a profitable career out of birthwork, but never quite could…

Or maybe it was someone who was too scared to even fully commit and say, “I want this doula career to feed my entire family… and even more families beyond mine.”

Or maybe it was someone who had huge dreams…  and then one day she saw someone else (a doula with less experience) come in and do the things she wanted to do…. And maybe that doula was me.

And so I’m dedicating this episode to that person, not to stir the pot (though I love stirring the pot)… but because money has been such a dirty word in the birth community, and I’m just honestly ready for us all to move beyond that.

And I want new doulas to know that it’s okay to do this work for money… and it’s okay to make a lot of money doing it.

And the dream of having financial abundance shouldn’t get you canceled on social media.

I never met a single birthworker who got into this work for the money.

I met a thousand doulas who DIDN’T get into birthwork because they thought there wouldn’t be enough financial exchange… aka money… to support their family. 

And to be honest, I met a thousand birthworkers who left this work because of lack of money!

It’s about damn time we tended to this money-wound that is running rampant in birthwork…

And it’s time we freaking help each other make more money…. so we can serve more women, support our families, and not burn out in the process!

Today I am sharing The Simple Framework to Mind-Blowing Success as a Doula.

It has nothing to do with birth… and everything to do with healing your money-wound… and in particular -  overcoming your fear of investing in yourself.

I hear it probably more often than I hear anything else as a birthworker business coach.
People tell me all the time, “I don’t have money to even start.”

So let's talk about it.

And then, after that, I'll help you get to a place where you have 100% confidence that whatever money you spend on yourself (and on your business) you're going to make it back… tenfold. 

So, if there is a little part of you, a little tinge of you, that's nervous… That's nervous about investing in your business and your future… and it’s different for everyone, right? To some people, investing $100 is no big deal, $1,000 is no big deal, $10,000 is no big deal to some people…. 

…but maybe for you, you might not really have a thousand dollars in your bank account ready to spend. 

You might have to put some things on a credit card. You might have to take a payment plan, or maybe even borrow some money from your mom…. or whatever your financial situation is. 

But I just wanted to have a heart-to-heart with you because I know something that you probably don't know yet…

I know that when you invest in your business, your entire freaking life will change for the better. 

Making those scary investments in yourself is absolutely 100% what puts you ahead of everybody else.

I think that to be a really successful businesswoman, you kind of always have to be on the uncomfortable side of investing in yourself and investing in your business. 

And I just wanted to share a story from my own business because as I started growing… I had to work through some of these money blocks too!

I told you that I took a doula training program 4 years ago, the course costed about $2,000, but I did it in Atlanta. So I had to fly to Atlanta. I stayed in an Airbnb. So the whole thing together cost like $3,500. 

And, you know… investing that $3,500 to become a doula didn’t scare me too much, because I was so excited.

But then, like most brand-new doulas, I sat on my butt for a very long time and didn't make money…. Because I just didn’t know what to do - what to actually do to find clients and make birthwork my career… 

…and that’s an unfortunate place that most women are at after attending those 3-day doula  trainings. 

Anyway, the initial investment to get my doula business started didn’t scare me, but the next thing I invested in scared the shit out of me. 

And the next thing I invested in after that initial doula training program was a business course for $2,000.

It was an investment to teach me how to grow the online portion of my business. 

And a few months after I invested that $2,000 I had my very first $10,000 month.

I spent $2,000. I did exactly what my teacher said. And a few months later, I made $10,000. 

That was the most I had ever made in a single month in my life until that point. 

So here is the most important question of the day…

If I told you, “If you invest in yourself, there is a chance that six months from now, a year from now… you’ll make $2,000 a month, $5,000 a month, maybe even $10,000 a month..” would you be able to find the money to invest in yourself?

That's the question that I have for you… 

A lot of people say “I don't have the money”… But I urge you to do some self-reflection and ask yourself, “If I knew that the return on investment would come back to me, would I be able to find the money?”

Maybe the answer is “no…”

But maybe the answer is “yes.” 

Yes, you can find the money somehow… and maybe it's going to be uncomfortable, but you're willing to do it because you believe in yourself and you know that down the road, you have the potential to make $2,000 a month, $5,000 a month, $10,000 a month… 

It was just a few months after I invested that $2,000 that I had my first $10,000 month.

Was that $2,000 course I invested in a “get rich quick scheme.”

I bet the woman who left me that podcast review thinks so.

What do I think? I think it was the best $2,000 I’ve EVER spent in my life.

It CHANGED my life… completely.

On March 23rd, 2021, I saw the potential in myself so much so that I invested in that course.

On July 13th, 2021… less than 4 months later, I retired my partner.

If that’s a get-rich-quick scheme, sign me up all day long.

But my story doesn’t end there.

The next business investment I made was $3,500 for a mentor.

That dollar amount kind of scared me, but you know what I said, I said, “After I invested in that $2,000 course and I made $10,000, what if I invest $3,500 and make $15,000 a couple months later?” 

And that's exactly what happened….

So I invested the $3,500 a couple months after my first $10,000 a month. And then a couple months after that, I had a $15,000 month where I did a “flash sale” of my childbirth education course.

And after that, I got to the point where I began to realize that any money I invest in myself, I’m going to get it back. I belive in myself that much.

So here I am, less than four years after starting my doula business. 

Here I am, happily spending $10,000 per year just to be a part of one single mastermind, like a membership.

Can you imagine that? That's where I got in just four years.

To a place where investing that $10,000 in myself doesn't scare me, because I've proven to myself over and over again that I am capable and that I can figure it out. 

And trust me when I say this, I do not have any special superpowers, I bootstrapped my entire Doula business.

Yes, I invested in the Doula training. Yes, I invested in the online business training. But I didn't invest in any fancy tech, or a website developer, or a designer for my social media, or anything like that. 

I spent the $5000 it took to get my base education… again which was a doula training program and an online business program… and then I put on the blinders and I said, “This is enough, I'm going to make it happen with what I have.”

I refused to stay on that hamster wheel we talked about in part one of this series.

I refused to keep investing in certifications, and doing the lactation consultant training, and doing the postpartum certification, and doing all of these different things that weren't actually helping me turn this birthworker gig from a hobby (that was costing me a ton of money) into a business that makes multiple 6-figures.

And just so you know, now that I'm on the other side of getting my business off the ground, now that I’m investing in myself, I get to meet all of the other amazing businesswoman in the birth community that are also investing in themselves…

I get to see how all of the women I look up to in the birth community, the women creating massive movements and supporting thousands (if not tens of thousands) of women per year… are all investing in BUSINESS education.

All of us.

So how did I get to where I am today? By putting my head down and focusing on two things: my foundational knowledge of birth and the foundation of growing a sustainable business….

…And then continuing to always be on the uncomfortable side of investing in myself because I now know that every dollar I invest is coming back to me tenfold in the next year.

That $10,000 mastermind that I'm a part of is going to turn in to a six-figure month. (If not this year, then next year. I 100% believe that. It's not an “if”, it's a “when”).

But I want you to know that I didn't just wake up one day saying, “Oh, no big deal, let me just invest thousands of dollars into myself…”

It wasn't like that for me.

I wanted it bad enough, that I rented out the two extra bedrooms in my house… as a pregnant woman and then as a woman with a newborn… and I'm sure you can imagine exactly how not fun it was to have two other adults living in my house with a newborn… 

But my vision was so clear… And I knew that it was going to be worth it.

The moral of the story is that investing in yourself is scary, but it's a whole lot less scary if you have a clear roadmap to get your investment back.

And that clear roadmap is inside the Birthworker Membership.
