Welcome to episode 17 of the Birhtworker Podcast… this the shortest episode yet, and - in my opinion - the most important episode yet!
This is part 2 of a 3-part podcast series as we head into the grand opening of the birthworker membership, so if you haven’t listened to episode 16, hit pause and go listen to that one first.
In part one, we talked about the importance of building a sustainable business from day one… and today we are switching gears from tangible business advice, to something a little different…
Today I want to talk about self-limiting beliefs in birthwork… because I see them all the time, and you know what? I used to feel them all the time too.
It’s hard to say which self-limiting belief I see most in the birth community because there are so many!
They sound like, "once I have 1000 followers then I will take a business class and expand my offerings”…
Or “I haven’t given birth before, so how can I even work in the birth community when I haven’t been through it…:
Or “I’m going to discount my prices because I don’t have much experience.”
Or sometimes it shows up like, “Let me just keep taking these different certification programs and get my doula certification, and my postpartum certification, and my sleep training certification, and I'm gonna become a lactation consultant, and I'm gonna do all these things… And then I can be successful.”
The whole mindset of “I don't have what I need right now to start… so let me go outside of myself and find all these things… let me do all these things and collect these certifications so they can just get covered in dust on my wall before I ever pay them off…”
That last one - which I call the certification hamster wheel - is something that I see all over the birth community… and it’s 100% stopping women from creating their dream six-figure doula business.
I took my Doula training (when I learned how to be a Doula) less than 4 years ago…
…and one of those years I spent on that hamster wheel of self doubt… That, “well I don't have a kid yet so how can I do this.”
That “well, let me just take more certifications programs and learn theory, and then maybe clients will want to hire me…”
That was me too!
So, it really wasn't until two to three years ago where I said, “What I’m doing isn't freaking working, I need to change something, and I need to figure out what to do…”
And that's when I started to see my doula business as a business and I started to see myself as an entrepreneur…
And instead of investing in certifications simply out of fear that I wasn’t an “expert” enough…
I started seeing myself as an entrepreneur. I started investing in business courses that would help me take my love for birth and my passion for birth, and help me understand how to get that into the hands of more people so I can impact more lives.
So, if you're sitting there thinking, “Well I don't have kids yet,” and “Maybe I just am not good enough…” do you know who else started on this path before they had kids?
I did…
Haley did from Tranquility by HeHe. She still doesn't have kids and she runs an insanely successful worldwide doula agency and birth education business.
Emily Saldaya from the Freebirth Society. She had created essentially an empire in the niche of freebirth before she had her daughter.
And the more you look around and start looking for these things you can begin to break down your self-limiting beliefs and you can see that nothing is holding you back except for you.
Hear this loud and clear:
There is no arbitrary level of expertise that you have to go above in order to be worthy of calling yourself a Doula or finding success in birthwork.
And guess what? Your success in this community will in no way be tied to your knowledge about birth or your experience as a doula.
Let me say that again… your success in the birth community will in no way be tied to your knowledge about birth or your experience as a Doula.
What???? I know, crazy right? Isn’t success always based on knowledge and experience?
Not in birth and not necessarily in business either.
But rather, your success in this community will be built on the foundation of who you are as a person, and the framework you have to finding your zone of genius and understanding how to get that into the hands of more people.
Next week we are diving into my simple framework for finding mindblowing success as a doula. And I bet it’s a whole heck of a lot easier than you ever imagined.
Next week we’ll also chat about the framework that I've created and what I teach inside the Birthworker Business Membership that opens in just 7 days, because my passion and what lights my fire…right this minute… is helping women like you who have birth in your blood, but you just need that framework for tuning-in to what makes you special, what makes you stand out, and being able to curate this dream career… not in a way that is doing what everyone else is doing… but in a way that fits you, and your passion, and your skills, and what you want your life to look like, and business to look like.
Gone are the years of conforming to fit what everyone else is doing.
It’s time to say no to that and YES to building exactly the kind of life and business you want for yourself.
If you want to be the first to find out more about the Birthworker Membership and how it’ll help you crush every goal you have for yourself, check out the shownotes or go to birthworker.com/join to get on the waitlist.
Thank you so much for being here! I’ll see you next week.
